stuff again

i posted something on monday afternoon and then on monday evening when showing lauren the site and getting her sign up to blog i accidentally deleted the post. i struggled for abit trying to remember what i posted and eventually i remembered it was about the very entertaining new link i have added to my links on the right hand side called "query letters i love". i particularly like this one... and then i went on to mention that really funny heineken ad (with jennifer aniston trying to get to the last six pack on the top shelve, know what i'm talking about?). anyway, i've been asking people about it on some social occassions. i seem to like it more than others! i don't deny that it did make me smile and wonder why all ads aren't so funny and well made? so, yeah, i've gotten lauren to sign up. but will she blog? will she post pics? i don't know, time will tell. i sure as hell hope she posts pics because she's seeing the most awesome spots in the world. other than that i am bruised and battered from doing 4 and a half pdf to html conversions in 3 days. now i'm gonna try and remove a very stubborn virus from the accountant's pc. one last thing, if you haven't done so yet, do it now! surf the web with mozilla firefox (it's way safer than internet explorer)

almost, entirely dynamic

yesterday and today i worked on getting the last big section here on phunkd dynamic. that section would be the portpholio section. today it is dynamic. meaning i don't have to copy and paste from the previous update of a page or add additional lines of code to the old static portpholio holding page. checking all the links between the pages and adding the new page link to the other pages, then uploading only to see i've made a mistake with some link or text. no ways... i have a whole admin system for that now. it's faster and simpler. i really should've done this a long time ago. i'm not sure about the layout of the page for viewing a specific portpholio but i'll have to sleep on that for a bit. aswell as the portpholio section being dynamic it is searchable now too!

find it

i have added a search facility to the website. unfortunately not all the content is dynamic yet. it searches blog posts, comments and the descriptions of the bloggers. results are shown for the different sections that are searched. i will be having a look at making it better, but at the moment i am quite chuffed. try it out and let me know what you think?

happy bday to us!

early this morning at roughly 4:30am... the hubby and i got dressed and went down to the beach with some champers, orange juice and a blanket. not any beach might i add, we went to the spot where we got married a year ago. to watch the sunrise and spend a moment or two celebrating our anniversary together in a peaceful and beautiful place.

finished

i finally got my java applet working with all the functionality i envisioned... but it's not web friendly at all. what's the point then heh? well, i just don't know... i'm presenting the assignment tomorrow morning at 11am and i doubt it's got to work in a web page, i flippin hope not. i'll have to check the assignment document when i get home. then i'll start pooping, or not. i've searched and scoured the web for a solution to this but there doesn't seem to be. i compiled the app in WebStart and that didn't help. i created a policy file and that didn't help. i have figured out that it's probably because of the layout... so do i undo tons and tons of code and basically start from the beginning to get it right? well, yes if i only knew how... i guess, now is a good time to start. but before i go i need to mention the wind. the-super-gale-force-wind-that-almost-blew-me-off-the-balcony-when-i-opened-the-door... go away, i've had enough

rough

last night was good, but today i feel a little rough around the edges... after slogging away at work on the java app and not making a tremendous amount of progress, i decided to sit down in the front of the laptop at home and for change not play hereos but rather try and get around the one last bit of functionality i needed to finish the app! although i was distracted, i managed to get it done... yes, i finally got it! now i just have to put all the other things in, but the functionality is there and i am going to make my deadline. yay! so, we celebrated. we grabbed 2 pommies and headed to buckley's to play some pool and watch england try and reach 312. they did pretty well in the end, but not enough. it's a pity that we don't have pietersen on our side... 100 of 69 balls, way to go! anyway, we got the pommies horribly drunk, showed them a good time and fed them before we got home this morning at 1am. all on a week night! although i didn't drink a ton, it doesn't take much for me to get drunk nowadays and the consequences the next are always horrible. my head's not pounding but even after a juicy salad i still feel yuk! can some-one please turn the brightness down?

hibernation!

So it is still winter here and colder than ever, it is the sunny crisp days with a slight breeze that are colder than the snowy ones, go figure, it was -10 last night and i had to walk around food hunting as they do not feed me on my free day ( i must have a don“t feed the animals sign hanging on me somewhere ;) I have two weeks left of this contract and then it is back to my cozy little flat and my friends in berlin, i cannot wait as Dresden although it is a beautiful city is getting boring! but have some pics loaded so have a look! On the 26th i will go snowboarding with Friends from SA, finally after 4 years... wow... i will be off to france for 8 days to gracfully glide down the powdery white slopes of snow, elegantly falling and tumbling down causing some major avalanche?? he he will keep you posted... and then perhaps a little visit home for my 30th but the plans have all been rather up in the air (of course got to try and be there for my 30th) so i hope you are all well and yes I FINALLY BLOGGED AGAIN! woo hoo!!

i'm well chuffed

i've been a busy little bee in the background the past few weeks. i've been reluctant (for obvious reasons known only to me) to mention it, but i've made some good progress and i'm darn happy and wanna just tell somebody (after all these days of slogging). during my 2 weeks leave i spent 1 week learning the theory of java. the next week i was back at work and keen to start trying out some stuff, but i never had the time, it was chaotic and busy. then i had another week off and i tried to focus on learning the language and the concepts but it was hard to focus when the sun was shining outside ;) so far this week i have had some time to explore and i'm overjoyed. i've got an assignment from the course that has to be handed in next week and it's all falling into place. when it's done i'll put it on the site so you can see what i did. i've also been thinking about adding search functionality to this website. but i'll only start scoping that out after i've finished my java project. in the meantime here's an addictive little applet that gave me plenty of insight into buttons and arrays: pairs (not my work by the way. also, i tested in mozilla and it doesn't work, so check it out in internet explorer folks!). you'll need the java plug-in to view it and java enabled on your browser... and today is thirsty thursday, yay!

it's been another week

i had another relaxing week off from work and now i am back at the ol' grind stone. i spent most of last week trying to figure out java (the little cup of coffee java). i hit quite a few dead-ends and it means i've got a lot of figuring out to do before i can claim to know much about the subject at all! but i am getting there, hopefully this week at work will help me focus more than i was able to at home. on the w/end ed and i went to: 1) errol's dad's 60th (claude) bday bash, 2) jaydon's 1st bday (wendy and clint's little one, same day as you vinnie!) and 3) a trance festival. claude's 60th was very good. a live band in the backyard and plenty of dj's pushing each other off the decks in order to have their turn. we did leave early because we needed to hit the road to gordon's bay quite early the next day... but i tell you what errol is quite the party organiser! i had a blast. jaydon's 1st bday bash (with his parents friends) was a little affair. we played baseball, practised setting up our new tent and did big people stuff. all the while the baby slept, stood, gurgled and did baby stuff with some extra toys on hand to eat, shake, throw etc. the trance festival was just past the hugenot tunnel in a valley surrounded by the mountains and a river running through it (does rainbow end ring a bell?). those hippie people sure know how to find the nicest venues. i'm not a fan of trance but discovered that the chill choons in the chill-out area (right on the river might i add) are right up my alley. so in future i will be exploring break-beats, dub and some dj called dj nasty. the camping part was cool and as first timers, ed and i didn't do too badly. although our tent did blow away on sunday. but thanks to the very friendly hippies, they fetched it and pitched it all again for us while we were away. not 'removing' a single item but instead putting things in strange places to have a laugh at our expressions when we returned to camp. i doubt i'll do a trance festival again though. it's too expensive and i just don't like trance. i'll definitely camp again...

it's been one week

i had all of last week off and boy was it a busy one. i pursued some studies, got my bike fixed, sorted out some hifi coruption issues, started demolishing the water wasting pond, cleared the massive mess the well-point okes left behind and still managed to have some quality fun in the sun. yesterday was spent at big bay for the ghfm summer of fun (or something like that) tour. it wasn't too windy, but it was quite hot. we came prepared though. kitted out with umbrella's, caps, cold refreshments and a very cold ocean to boot! the sound was good and the entertainment was err, pretty entertaining... we ended the sun and wind-blasting day eating sushi on the beachfront. ahhh, that's the life! i've noticed that since i've put the pics for my matric reunion up i've been getting tons of hits in the galleries, i dig it but i noticed that the top pics are now for the matric reunion and not for our beach wedding anymore and that feels a little weird. having said that, it's our one year anniversary the 2nd week in feb! time certainly does fly!

Happy 2005!!

Hello all!! Heres wishing you all a successful 2005! And lets hope that this one doesn't pass as quickly as the last!! Would be good to hear what everybody got up to to celebrate the new year... I spent it in London with Nix, Moller, Adriana and a few others. It comprised of cheese, biscuits and wine at Nix's place as a warm-up, followed by a quick visit to the neighbours party (a 007, black tie do!). Then to watch fireworks off the london eye - where we all failed to get hold of any alchohol, even after a valiant effort by Nicky and myself... and then back to the neighbours party. We left after Nix pissed off the Irish neighbour (Still don't know what we did - are you speaking to her again?????!) All in all it was a very enjoyable night..... Hope to hear all your news!!! Once again, all the best for the new year!! Hugs, K x And see some of you soon!! ;-)

my car and i

so there i was, cruising along beach road in table view on my way to work. minding my own business, checking out stuff... everything but the road in front of me and not a second too early (or is it late?) either. the kind driver in front of me had stopped at a pedestrian crossing and i was about to say howzit to the rear end of her car. screeeeech, a little sideways on the road (and off the road) plus alot of smoke from the burning rubber of my tyres. the pedestrian gave me the evil eye and the kind driver sped away. i turned back onto the road, hoping that i'd pay more attention since i was wide awake now! other road news: it happened awhile ago but it's been bugging me. who is the feather-plucker that decided that the 'slow' lane from table view to milnerton needed all that patch work? i think they've actually made the road worse and since i don't like to get speeding fines, i find i drive in the slow lane quite abit. it's just completely doff and bumpy, what a waste of our taxes! thanks to coda for pointing out the dubious going-on's at musica digital. i'll wait for the mozilla friendly version...

tis the silly season

and thank goodness i did my shopping weeks ago! not that i would have time to spend pushing, shoving, biting and other frantic late shopper stuff in any of the retail outlets... i've just been too busy! i am at work this week... thinking that i'd take it slow, work on some private stuff and maybe even nap abit because it'll be quite dead at the office right? hahaha hahahaha haha ha it's been so poop busy, clients wanting stuff now, before the end of the year! tomorrow (christmas eve day) i have two other jobs that need to be done. today i can't even upload changes because our service provider doesn't like my ftp program (actually it's a little more technical than that, but i won't get into) anyways, last week i went to me 10 year matric reunion and it was blast to see my old school mates. it's amazing what some of them are up to. i posted pics in the gallery, i am expecting vanessa (event organiser) to post some of her pics but i'm not sure when that'll be! before i sign off... a special note to all my friends and family: here's wishing you the safest, bestest, happiest christmas and new years, all my love,

Jingle Bells...

Ho ho ho and all that jazz... well i guess another year and the frantic shopping has just begun (for all those late shoppers... like me!) the malls are filled with frenzied shoppers buying whatever is left on special, packed like sardines hidin from the cold (at least here) the gluhwein keeping us warm and happy and oblivious to the fact that we have not seen the sun for a while! I am having a great time here still, besides the stupid move to go shopping on the last saturday before christmas *grin* It is hard for me to imagine christmas without a christmas market, bundled up in your winter woolies, drinking gluhwein and waiting for the snow, now all you need is a few best friends and family and it would be perfect! But I am of course envious of the sunny warm weather and the beach! I have been working through as normal for this time of year, no days of since the 6th... and then the 23+24 free and then work til new years... WOW 2005... !!! It looks like I have made a good impression on the Sarassani Family and so they want me to go on tour with them, I could also be designing the costumes for the new show, and then back here to dresden for next year xmas... well we will see how it all pans out! so I am gonna wish you all a lot of love light warmth and laughter for xmas, and a see you all soon!

another move

last week thursday we packed up our computers at work and on friday the movers moved the goodies to our new offices in observatory, while most of the staff took the day off. i've been pretty apprehensive about the relocation of the offices but i'm experiencing a better a commute so far, it is the beginning of the holidays so i might be jumping to some really positive conclusions about the new commute. all i know is that as i sit here and type this, and as i glance over the golf course at the river club at the m5 and see all those cars constantly piling up to get onto the n1, is that i'll probably never take the m5 to get to and from work. going through salt river is working pretty good for me. next wednesday evening i'll be going to my matric reunion, it's in melkbosstrand (bonus) at the seafood lapa. i'm sure when i was fresh out of school i scoffed at the idea of a 10 year matric reunion and now i'm pretty excited to be going... hmm, i guess i'm not really the rebel i thought i was? details: table view high matric '94 pupils 10 year reunion at seafood lapa on the 15th dec from 7pm onwards. vanessa sinden is handling it and you need to contact her for bookings before or on the 11th dec

it is misleading pt.2

so a work collegue mailed the asa (advertising standards authority of south africa) and asked them about that ad by telkom that is misleading... asa told him that they have received a few complaints and they're looking into it. that was about 2-3 weeks ago... today, he got a pdf document report of what went down. first i would like to highlight that once again telkom believes that everybody in sa who has seen the ad is under the impression that what the ad portrayed is something that will happen only in the future and it hasn't actually really happened yet... excerpts from the asa directorate ruling: 1. complainants (sp?) pointed out the following: the commercial tells the story of "juma", a tanzanian boy who has "...just turned six...". the commercial explains that this would not have been possible had it not been for the "...emergency operation, performed by cape town heart surgeon doctor anton louw". the commercial explains, "...the real miracle is that juma and anton were three thousand miles apart, thanks to isdn technology". at the end of the commercial the pay-off line "touch tomorrow" appears on screen, and the voiceover states "from telephones, to distant surgery and this is just the beginning" 2. response: the respondent submits that the aim of the commercial is a creative rendition of what technology and the advances in technology can do to enhance the lives of customers. technically speaking, it is possible to have one surgeon direct another to perform specialised procedures using video conferencing, which might be made possible by isdn technlogy in the near future. 3. actual complaint: the complainants believe that the commercial is misleading based on the fact that there is no isdn technology in tanzania, nor has remote surgery ever been performed in south africa. telkom is misleading consumers into believing that the event has actually taken place, when it has not. 4. result: respondent is required to: - withdraw the commercial in its current format - the process of withdrawing this commercial must be actioned with immediate effect - the process of withdrawing the commercial must be completed within the deadlines in clause 15.3 of the procedural guide, and - the commercial may not be used in future this is good news, telkom may believe it can do anything it pleases but not today. i can't wait for the monopoly to one day be over...

property update

ed and i have finally found something nice... this actually happened about 2 weeks ago. we went out to langebaan and viewed some properties, mainly vacant land with body corporate's that have rules on what type of building to build and colours to use for the exterior walls and roof... arggh cape dutch is so bleh and it's a pity that this is the way that it seems to be going in langebaan. anyways, after finding out that we could've had 2 prime pieces of land about 8 months ago for a about a quarter of what 1 costs now (ouch that hurt) we finally found a huge erf (with a body corporate) about 2 blocks away from the beach that one would call a bargain. simply because it is. the seller has accepted our offer and we are in the process of getting ownership. yeeha. cape dutch style here we go... bleh ;) other than that we've been terribly busy visiting mates and having a really good time, helping mom clear the clutter and also helping get her place looking like a million bucks. time consuming and back-breaking stuff. more a little later and the pics are coming soon...

it is misleading

one night when ed and i were watching a movie at the cinema that telkom ad came on, the one where a doctor at groote schuur hospital operates on a kid in tanzania, via telkom's infrastructure. ed was blown away. "wow", he said. i wasn't fooled though and rightly so, because telkom does not currently have this infrastructure. this never happened... the doctor is an actor and the kid doesn't / didn't have a life threatening medical problem. telkom says: "It is a story, and I reserve the right to tell a story. If we had put something like 'Imagine in the future', it would have lost all sense of impact and authenticity for the viewer. It was a 50/50 call, and we took it." authenticity? wtf? i think they'd have more credibility if they had actually said something like 'imagine the future'... cause i certainly knew that what telkom was portraying in that ad was just not possible right now, today! come clean telkom.
