10 digit telephone numbers?

from october, all south africans will be required to dial the full ten digit telephone number, ie the usual telephone number plus the area code. this is in order to create more telephone numbers because apparently available numbers are running out in gauteng. now what does that really help? it's not like they are creating new area dialling codes and potentially a ton more telephone numbers. if all numbers are taken in the 012 area code, how are more numbers going to be created by simply asking the citizens (or forcing them) to dial the telephone number plus the area code? can some-one please clarify this for me? it seems to me that our telephone call costs are going to go up because we will no longer be making local calls, we'll now be making national calls. is it possible that icasa and telkom are in cahoots with each other to make as much money as possible before it's too late? how is it possible that americans can continue to dial local telephone numbers when they have more people and more landlines than us?

schools

the place were kids learn for a better future (among other things, kids will be kids right?) have gone back to school this week. mostly bad news for me because the traffic has gone to the dogs as a result. not my main concern though... that goes to the stupid assholes who break into schools and steal their resources. in this day and age a computer is not for a pupil seeking to 'specialise', computers are used in most offices nowadays, useful to every single pupil in our schools. for the shuttleworth foundation to give back to the disadvantaged in a really helpful way is just awesome. for a scumbag to deliberately break into a school and steal those gifts is despicable... and it wasn't as if the community wasn't getting anything out of the deal, the schools had 'open days' for the surrounding community (it's probably when the scumbags 'cased' out the places). more stories about schools and kids

chaotic

i had last week off in order to move our home from bloubergstrand to duynefontein. there were alot of things to be done, alot of running around to do and being accosted by a psycho woman at canal walk on friday didn't help matters much, plus i had to organise to get ed's birthday present to the new house without him knowing a thing... all in all, the move has been acheived. the office is set-up, sort of. the network was configured but that's gone wonky. the adsl is not playing nicely either. i guess it might be networking skills though, which are not good. all other rooms are completely moved in and sorted. i had great success in getting ed's pressie to the new house without him catching wind. i had further success in concealing what the pressie was aswell. *smile* he was ecstatic, mission accomplished. psycho woman at canal walk? well that's a long one. here's the condensed story: paid for parking, leaving building. woman entering building. accuses me of taking her parking ticket from the machine. i deny this. she insists and grabs my paid-for parking ticket. i protest some more. she insists i've stolen her ticket. i wrestle the ticket out of her hand. she calls me all sorts of nasty things and follows me to my car. i'm flabbergasted. shaking my head, i motion to her that is infact a psycho... she's in her car next to me frantically searching for her misplaced ticket ( i hope she found it and felt like a right tit). i drive away with crumpled, torn ticket. it doesn't work at the gate but the kind parking attendant takes pity on me after i mention psycho woman and he lets me out... phew! poor germany. i had hoped they would make it to the finals, but last night's game with the final goal in extra time was quite a kick in the balls... i'm hoping france will play well this evening and make it through to the finals.

more competition

i had heard about virgin coming into the cellphone market in sa. i had no idea they would try their hand at banking too. this is great news for consumers, let's hope that they can seriously offer better and cheaper service in both sectors. it's about time the big 4 banks and the big 3 cellphone operators caught a wake up call! I'll certainly be checking it out.

soccer fever

last night we sat back and watched the big boys (aka brazil) take on a very impressive croatia. by the time half time came along i seriously wanted to switch off and go to bed... everytime a croatian player 'took on' a brazilian player for the ball, that brazilian player took a great fall and was awarded a penalty. not only is brazil playing like babies, it's alot of the teams and it's seriously ruining any viewing pleasure i might have had. i thought the ref in this particular match was playing favourite with brazil, because when the croatians made a very fair claim against the brazilians attacking dangerously it fell on the ref's deaf ears... i heard that ref's were told to penalise against dangerous tackling on 'star players' and it appears it is true. "What has been clearly said to referees is 'please protect the physical integrity of the players', and that means protecting the big stars," Blatter said at a press conference here on Tuesday. now the whole tournament is going to be a big 'fall down' fest. yay! more here and here

what to do

i've thought about the increasing levels of crime. please don't tell me the stats say that crime is decreasing, because it isn't... there have been a spat of robberies in duynefontein recently - residents and police are linking it to the eskom drive to get people using energy effecient light bulbs and warm blankets on their geysers. the houses are being marked according to the difficultly the robbers would experience in the robbery attempt. so violence could be possible. i'm not saying eskom is involved, there is speculation that the people employed by eskom to distribute these items are involved. this sucks. this is a place where i have grown up and known for most of my life. it's a sleepy town, where when you drive through it there aren't many walls around the yards. garages are left open with no-one in sight and lots of 'goodies' to be seen... there's hardly been any crime in this town and in one evening last week more than 8 houses were robbed! earlier, i was reading carte blanche's site at the recent stories section (i went there to read this - unrelated) and came across this expat story and later clicked through to see some expats posts and their stories... i am stressed out about crime. my world revolves around ways to keep my stuff safe from criminal elements and working hard to get my stuff. so what's the solution? these people don't have stuff and want stuff. should they get a job and buy their own stuff? are they illiterate and unemployable? do they need further education? are they hungry and needing to feed their families? there could be a ton of reasons why my stuff and your stuff gets stolen. there has got to be a solid first step to getting our society working better than it is right now. should we emply more police and build more prisons? what about all the corruption (case dockets going missing in murder cases)? why does it seem like only carte blanche is asking these questions and all other forms of media are not? why are we so tolerant about it? should i buy a gun? and why are criminals walking around so freely (brazenly) while we increasingly become prisoners on our homes? there's got to be a solution, i don't feel positive about south africa's future when i read about all the crime. i love this country and i always hope for the best, but lately i'm seriously worried about our future... how do we make our country a better place for everyone?

Hey Y'all

Hello from a very hot and humid usa! Been having an absolute ball here - starting with a wedding in New York state and road tripping around the east coast. Arrived in New York last Wednesday and had quite a large one... hadn't seen katie in four years, so there was a load of catching up to do. On thursday we travelled up to the finger lakes where the wedding was being held. there where 14 of us staying in a lake house, so as you can imagine, there was a load of drinking and very little sleeping!! Oh, and you can buy kegs here!! We had a few of those down in the basement.... which was very handy!! The wedding was on Saturday and it was beautiful! The reception was on a vineyard, so yeah... we had our fair share of wine!! on sunday I said goodbye to all the fantastic people i met at the wedding and few back to new york to start a bit of an american road trip. WE had two nights in new york (and managed to get tickets to a baseball game!) one in Phili - where it is impossible not to run up the rocky stairs! - and where Jon had a bit of an accident and drove into the back of a very aggresive american!! Hahah!! and last night we spent the night with friends in Baltimore. We are off to washington dc today, altantic city tomorrow and I fly back to london on Saturday - back to the real world of work. Will write again soon friends! K x

The next month will be a STRESSED one of designing and creatinbg the new show which will start on the 24th of june, it is hopefully going to be the best work i have done in a long time... expect pics to be uploaded asap! it's small

it's amazing how things turn out. you couldn't plan it better. you couldn't imagine it happening. this past friday i wasn't going to go "large" because on saturday morning was my stop smoking course. my decision to not go "large" flew out of the window though when to my surprise (and melanie's), my name actually got drawn and i did infact win an ipod nano. we had joked about it and i had told a few people around me that i was going to win it, but when they called my name i didn't quite believe it... a few tequila's later, i managed to force myself and ed to go home. i was so sick when we finally did get home. i felt rotten all of saturday morning, nevermind some-one trying to get me to stop smoking, it seems a few tequilas do the job just fine! i've managed to not smoke on sunday and so far so good for today. it's a little tough but it's not either. there are some key smokes that start winding you up. for me, i have discovered, it's the one i have after breakfast at work... it's not as tough as i thought it would be and i am glad that i am now a non-smoker! yay! oh and i have an ipod nano, woohoo!

it's time

i've been quiet, i know, but i have some things 'hanging in the air'... in anticipation of ed's birthday on the 30th of june, i cleaned the back wall of 'old' the grafitti on a recent sunny day. the idea and venue for the party have changed though, come the 30th of june we're more than likely not going to be at our current address. because of the f*^@ers, we've seriously decided to move and we've found a really nice spot near the nuke plant in duynefontein. we haven't got it yet - it's 'hanging in the air' right about now - but i hope we do get it. if we do, on the 1st of july we'll be having abit of a party to celebrate ed's birthday... yay! tomorrow, ed and i are going to an allen carr 'easyway' course. this means, hopefully, come tomorrow afternoon we'll both be non-smokers. i'm a little nervous because i have attempted to quit before with no luck at all! ed, on the other hand, seems rather excited. wish us luck!

f*^@ers

this morning, after ed had just done 2 snoozes, i heard a police siren. not a full on one, you know the one where they do a 'wooo' just to get your attention? followed by pounding on our front door. i yell 'careful baby'. the cops enter and tell us some-one was trying to take yoghurt or something out the combi, it's open please go and check. it turns out the f*^@ers got the radio and were going through the site box filled with the guys coffee and sugar... anyway, cop goes through to the back yard to check if they came that way. they can't see anything or anyone, they leave. "ask the old people in the bush", they recommend. why do people do this? it just hacks me off because i've worked hard for the 'toys' i have and then some f*^@er just rips it out the dash! urrgh here's the irony. our neighbours dogs (one has 5 of them) are barking all the time, but there was not a single peep while the car was being broken into! it's time to move back to melkbos.

unacceptable

the striking security guards went on a 'rampage' through central cape town yesterday. mayhem, war zone... the use of words in this article pretty much summed it up. i just happened to bump into a friend who works on the foreshore last night and was told that the way it was described on the news and news websites was pretty accurate. he ended up having to get another a friend to come pick him up in town because there weren't any buses running. the way the strikers behaved yesterday is unacceptable. no doubt there are some among them who think that through this violent behaviour their demands for their increase will be met. maybe it will be, but it shouldn't. this violence shouldn't be rewarded. sawatu has to pay for the damage that their members caused. the negotiations have to be realistic and fair, seriously some of these people are earning peanuts for the work that they do. however, that does not mean that their behaviour yesterday was acceptable, it wasn't!

what fun!

this past saturday ed took me for my surprise birthday present. i had no idea what it would be, but thinking back to the previous year's surprise, i just knew it would be something really exciting. i had an awesome time quad biking through the winelands in kuils river on saturday. we managed to get a little movie of me doing donuts on top of hill and some nice pics. i definitely reccommend doing it, even if it isn't your birthday! thanks to everyone who joined us later for the birthday party. it was really cool. i had a really good time... now i've got to start thinking of something really cool to do for ed's bday! damien, do you remember our super good chuck norris joke that we came up with? i'm trying to remember but i'm not having any luck!

setup

so zuma got off on the rape charge. i had no doubt that he would. i also have no doubt that it was all a setup to take pressure off the corruption trial. i'm not saying it didn't happen, i seriously doubt it did though. it was a clever political spin to take everyone's eye off the real picture here (the corruption charges). when the corruption trial starts, zuma and his supporters will scream that the media is attacking an innocent... however, i really think there was a corrupt relationship between the arms dealers, shaik schabir (who hasn't served a single day on his sentence - appeals, aren't they just lovely?) and zuma. the circus around this rape trial has taken alot of credibility out of the prosecuting team's case and they haven't even started.

spotlight on the 'thieves'

here's a informative article about banks and their ridiculous charges. "Transaction fees are charged on every payment between individuals and dealers from different banks. However, only 2% of the transaction fee goes to Bankserv - the banks involved gobble up the rest."... i'm hoping this enquiry into the banks actually wields some results. they can't keep taking so much money away from us for the kind of service alot of us have to put with! oh and right near the end of the article there is this gem: Banks would rather like to think they compete on the basis of service delivery, not charges." lol. get real guys. your service sucks and your charges are too high. it's time to stop being so greedy! Update: Nedbank increased its headline earnings by 82.9 percent to R1.026 billion for the three months to March 2006 when compared with the same period in 2005. source increased by 82.9 percent, that's massive! are you wondering (like me) where that massive increase in headline earnings came from?

building

so we're adding some plugs to one side of the wall. we knock / grind the cement away. we get the plastic tubing to go into the wall. the wires, the plugs and a bag of mortar for patching it all up afterwards. the boys are going for it (jed and des). ed is running around like a blue assed fly and i'm showing dyan, moller and vincent some stuff in the office. they leave and i go to carry on helping the boys... so i start taking this mortar and putting it in the wall. i'm confused though because it looks like sand... but i'm not too worried because jed has one house under his belt already and he knows what's going on. apparently not! the boys didn't read the instructions on the mortar ('ready mixed') package. where it said in step 2: add cement...

Found Nemo!!!

Hello!! It has been a while I admit, but like Nix, I was trying to log in using the old link... without much luck!! All's good now though!! So, just returned from a fantastic week in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. Diving was amazing! We arranged a three-day dive trip with three days on a boat, two dives a day and lunch... saw rays, eels, a couple of wrecks and even found Nemo!! He is living in the Red Sea with all his cousins! Quite a cheaky little fella!! Took an underwater camera, so hopefully the pictures will do the corals and fish justice... will post them if they are deserving!! The evenings where spent chilling on cushioned floors in open-air lounges, drinking cocktails and smoking shisha's and the days that weren't spent diving where spent at the hotel pool, drinking more cocktails at the sunken bars and topping up my tan, shopping along the promenade.... or snorkelling at the private Hilton beach!! Ahhhhh - the life!!! Was welcomed back to the uk with cloud and rain, but was determined to wear my short sleeved shirt to show off new golden colour!! Back to reality, back to work in office.... K x

cute and furry no more

yup, the mouse has been 'taken care of'. after it munched holes in my latest, favourite pants i took drastic action and purchased 2 'classic' mouse traps. the ones where you put some cheese on the end and when the mouse pounces on it, the trap activates and... well you know... i must admit it didn't feel great to discover the critter was back in the house and had fallen prey to the trap. what must i do to keep mine and ed's clothes intact though?

about time

i've been bitching for awhile about the stoopid banks and their astronomical charges. it looks like there's been quite a few complaints from consumers / customers... and now the banks are going to be investigated. yay! a little over 2 months ago i took absa up on their offer for a gold cc instead on the normal silver one. i checked out the pros and cons. the yearly fee was abit more but the interest rates were much more favourable. so i got my silver card sliced and took possession of a shiny, gold card. a month later i checked my cc statement to check that absa was playing ball with regards to the interest charges. to my complete shock i noticed my debit interest had increased by about 3% instead of descreasing by about 1,5%... i went to their website and doubled checked the info regarding this and saw that i was actually being 'swindled' (the website now reflects their new charges - applicable from march 2006). i then went to my nearest branch of absa and asked the enquiries lady "what the hell?". i was then told that at the end of the previous month absa credit card division changed the interest rates across all cc's and there is now a flat interest rate of 19.75% for gold cc's (that's ridiculous by the way, credit interest rate is 2.75%. where is the love, absa?). then i am told that if i spend more than r10 000 a month the debit interest rate decreases... basically if i get myself more into debt, my bank will lower my debit interest rate. that's just super cool of you guys man! oh, and thanks for the heads up. i promptly approached another bank about a gold cc. my application was successful and i am now the proud owner of a gold cc at another bank with better interest and debit rates. good bye to you absa... slowly but surely you are forcing me to do business with your competitors.
