xmas day in melkbos

13 years ago, almost to the day, there was a huge veld fire that spread from the table view area (on the beach side) right through melkbos and eventually got stopped at the houses in koeberg / duynefontein. this christmas ed and i went to melkbosstrand, it was abit of a mission with roads being closed due to the fire that had being going for 2 days already. the r27 (west coast road) was sealed off and it was slow going on beach rd. the following 2 pics were taken from doodles and big bay. the next 2 were taken along beach rd between blouberg and melkbos (the 2nd one is near derde steen) it didn't seem that bad when we drove through to melkbos, it hadn't actually reached there yet. but with gale force winds it managed to get abit out of control. it somehow passed atlantic beach golf resort and hit melkbos, that's when we climbed on our roof to get a better look at what was going on, with sirens screaming past my mom's house every few minutes... these 2 are the evacuation of sea park (a retirement village behind my mom's spot) i also managed to get a nice sequence of the chopper support loading up with water from the sea nearby. and while i was on the roof this little (or very big) creature escaped the heat and flames and landed next to me! later we went and visited a friend who lives in bato way, pretty close to the bushes that were burning, and got some good pics of the fire and chopper dropping water. it was a pretty big fire and alot of damage could have been created because 13 years ago there was alot less development. but the firefighters and volunteers did a great job at controlling a damn big fire in terrible gale force conditions. well done everyone! these last 2 pics were taken as we were leaving melkbosstrand later on in the evening, the sign is on the way to the r27 (west coast road) which was still closed and the 2nd one is where we popped out on the r27 by big bay... i hope you all had a good, safe and loving christmas. i hope you have a great, safe and happy new year... see you all next year!

running on empty

the past week and abit everyone i know has been asking each other if they know where they can fill up. i know the closest garage to me is empty. there's simply no fuel. now i thought that it was only the western cape experiencing this fuel shortage problem but after listening to a national radio station this morning i heard that jo'burg is also a little low on fuel too. the problem is minor, but big. it's not like we are being boycotted and will never get fuel again. or the country can't afford to import crude oil. it's a glitch in the system so to speak. the fuel companies were told to convert all 97 fuel to the environmentally friendly unleaded 95, before the end of the year. it seems alot of the fuel producing plants decided to do this at the same time (more or less) and production fell. plus here in the western cape the caltex (chevron) plant in table view was running at a third of it's capacity due to maintenance... pretty much around the same time. hence the shortage in fuel. it seems they are working hard to get it sorted, in some instances they are claiming that there'll be fuel available in the next 24-36 hours. i reckon in a week things will be back to normal. i've been pretty lucky in being able to find some 95 fuel not too far from where i have been running around. there's fuel at the shell garage on n2 coming back to cape town (as you just get off the sir lowry's pass and just after the gordon's bay turn off). there's also 3 garages in melkbosstrand. i've stopped by the caltex there and they have fuel... the bp in west beach is empty, don't even bother just yet. anyone else wanna add info on what and where there is fuel available / not avaliable?

mid-week funny

if you're a lost addict like me and you've been following season 2 (some way or the other), you'd find this pic rather funny. it's a parody of the ending of episode 9 (season 2)... do not view the image if you haven't seen the episode yet, it's abit of a spoiler... [via]

woohoo!

it's actually going to happen, icasa is granting the sno a license this friday. alas, it looks like it'll only be able to start offering services in mid-2006. in the light of this latest info i'm seriously hoping that affordable, uncapped broadband will finally become a reality...

it's not melkbos

yesterday the armed response company called me at the office to let me know that the alarm went off and it shows zone 1 was triggered. that's the front door... i call ed and find out if he's at home and didn't have time to switch off the alarm? ed's not at home, ed's on site in bothasig. shit, my stomach sinks. i phone the armed response guys back and let them know that it's not anyone who has authority to enter the premises, go with caution and guns drawn... ie. shoot the ****ers when you get there. i leave work to go there and check it out. already i'm skimming what sort of damage control has got be done when i get there. oh shit... ed and i got a new tv and dvd player this w/end, i haven't got those insured yet. at that stage i started driving like a maniac in seriously buggered up traffic trying to get all the way from observatory to bloubergsands in a flash. complete and utter madness. armed response phones back. i've since made it onto the m5, about a quarter of the way there. "nothing to worry about ma'am, the house is all locked up and secure". i'm still coming through to check it out. why? it's silly but i've lived in a village most my life, a place where i never used to lock my car, i kept sound equipment (worth about r10 000 - r15 000) in it over night after coming back from gigs at 3am in the morning, too tired to unload. i've never been burgled in my life before. the plain and simple of it all, i was worried and wanted to check it out for myself. when i got there, the place was still locked up. the armed response guy (brendan, very nice) put my mind at ease about it all. but the reason for the alarm activating is weird. they said after power cuts it might send a signal to the control room when it comes back on and there's been quite a few power failures in the area recently and yesterday too. but the power never went out. how do i know? the hi-fi was still on when i got home and the time still correct. both of those things debunk the 'power cut' story. still wondering why the alarm would've gone off! any ideas anyone? today, the telly and dvd player are getting insured...

Brrrrrr

Hello!! Well, I would ask the question why is ed not blogging either????? I have no reasonably believable excuse for not blogging.... I have however been reading your posts sarah (as I'm sure many others are!), so the site is not a 'white elephant'!! Winter has arrived in all her force and glory and we are struggling into the odd 6 or 7 degree days and subzero nights. brrrrrrrrrrrrr!! At least the skies are blue and the sun is shining - for now. Snow is predicted for later in the week! Had a great week end away in Bath with Moller (aka taxi driver!), Nix and Adriana (who tried hard.... and came close... to getting us kicked out of the hotel!!!) it really was freezing, but festive! Girls - we will have to organise another road-trip early next year!!! perhaps nix, you can post the pics???? Have a busy few weeks to the run-up to christmas (or is "sprint-up" to christmas a better way to put it???) As always, there are a few work christmas parties to look forward to, off to germany next week end, then to vienna mid december and to scotland for christams. Nix is going to paris this week end (watch out for the burning cars!!!) and is on holiday for the next few weeks. Other than that, not much to report back on. Hope all of you in wonderful cape town enjoy the sun sea and warmth and send love and hugs to all!!! K xxx Oh, Mel... if you read this, I believe you bumped into my sister last week end!! If you see her again, give her a hug from me!!!!!

why, oh why?

i've been wondering why i'm the only one posting on the blogger... i couldn't come up with anything really good though. ed reckons it's because there's a picture of a baby (with cooties, sp?) on the page? i'll remove the picture if that'll make at least one of you post!

the last couple of weeks

ed and i have been to 3 weddings in the past 2 months, there are no more for the rest of this year as far as i know! the last one, i have to admit, rocked! congrats to adrianna & paul, jed & nicky and tina & dave... last sunday mom, dad, carla-mia and baby rachel (the in-laws) arrived from jo'burg to come and stay at our place for a week. ed and i finally got to met our niece, who is a cutie and well behaved! ed managed to scare the crap out of rachel one night while playing peek-a-boo. she's got a helluva crying face... i still laugh at the thought of it. that sounds bad, but it was really funny.

it's working!

since the start of november i have had 23 spam comment attempts, none of them successful. that's 2.3 spam attempts a day! i am well chuffed that i built and implemented my own system to keep them from plugging their crap on this website. out of the 23 attempts, 14 were for gambling / debt / loan related 'products' and 9 were for some sort of medicine / pills... i just hope they don't cotton onto the one thing that they do, that i use to keep their spam at bay.

chain emails

we all get them and most of the time it's a bunch of funny pictures / funny stories / stories of people being stupid, but alot of the time they're mails containing some warning for women to be careful because something bad is going to happen if you; go to your car, go clubbing, take the stairs... etc. i don't usually pay much attention, but it's the other 99 people you've sent it to that might and they'll forward it to 99 people they know and it just snowballs... today i got a very informative powerpoint presentation on what the ladies should do protect themselves, some things mentioned were: - use your elbow it's awfully handy and can do alot of damage - if your handbag is what they want, throw it away from you and run in the other direction. - use the lift rather than quiet stairwells - run! even if they have a gun. 4 percent of the time they will hit you and even then it won't be life threatening. run! etc. then it went on to explain that a serial killer is playing a recording of a baby crying to get unsuspecting do-gooders (ie. woman) to come out of their houses late at night to, er hmm, kill them. most of the mails i receive are from woman, if not all, and i have been making it my business to make sure that they're not sending 'scary' false information to alot of other people by checking the story out on snopes.com to see whether or not it's a urban legend / hoax or simply the truth. if it's a hoax i "reply to all" and send a link with abit of information from the page. i try and be polite about it, but i also try and make it very clear that people shouldn't be sending these false messages around the web. the serial killer story has been circulating the web for roughly 2 years... the picture is from this hoax that has been sent around the web since 2001. ps. if you have ever sent me a chain email, this post is not meant to offend, just help you make the right choice before forwarding it to everyone on your contact list! check it out before you send it on.

the struggle is over (or not)

On several occasions, Zuma broke into his favourite revolutionary song, Thatumshini Wami (Bring Me My Machinegun), sending the students into a frenzy. that excerpt from this story shocks me. 10 years on and the ex-deputy president of our country sends students (our future) into a frenzy when he sings about some-one bringing his machinegun. man, that just doesn't make me feel like we're heading in the right direction at all...

modus operandi

i have figured it out and i bet everyone else out there has figured out the bots / people who spam your comments... but you can't tell me, just like i can't tell you because then they would change their modus operandi! i tried blocking ip addresses, insane, because they can chop 'n change them as they see fit. i tried blocking anything with a list a keywords (holdem, poker, etc). but then i got tons of other keywords, i would spend a good 10 - 20 minutes a day updating my files for getting rid of these very unwanted spam comments. it's utter madness! upon closer inspection of the file i create when one comments on the site, i noticed one thing they all seem to do, it's lame and stupid (yes, you f*^&ing spammers, you're stupid!). i have one way to block and the exact same way to delete anything posted by the scoundrels. it's heaven, so until they figure out that they're all being stupid, i'm as happy as pig in s*#t! ps. happy happy birthday damien

i don't think so

so in an article on tonight, they say something about jennifer aniston laughing, having fun ... as she watched the heartthrob's performance who would this heartthrob be? none other than vince vaughn! i wouldn't call him a heartthrob, but that's just me maybe? what do you guys think? am i simply, and maybe unfairly, comparing vince vaughn to brad pitt? he's probably a nice guy, but not a heartthrob...

sno

It is significant that yesterday, the Minister of Communications, Minister Ivy Matsepe-Cassaburi announced that the Second National Operator (SNO) will be granted a licence on 17 September 2004. [source] (search for "sno", date: 27 august - 2 september 2004) It is unfortunate that it has taken this long to announce the SNO, and we are hopeful that the September 17 deadline will not be shifted. [source] (once again, search for "sno", date 27 august 2004) so what could possibly be the delay, it's been over a year since that announcement? one could spectulate on the numerous reasons, but it won't help. so how can we make it happen? supporting hellkom might be a good place to start. Click on Facts & Info, very scary stuff indeed! President Thabo Mbeki labeled the rates charge on fixed lines telephony in South Africa as "unacceptable" in his State of the Nation address in February [2005]. nice observation president, what's being done to fix that?

Guy #1: So apparently, Jodie Foster loses her daughter on this, like, plane that she designed. Guy #2: Whoa, really? Guy #1: Yeah, and it's supposed to be like the biggest plane ever built.
