bad deal?

fnb has loaned about r91 million to a major zimbabwean bank in an effort to help the country. some of the money has already been used to buy fuel for zimbabwe as it has suffered from regular shortages of fuel, among other things. i can't help thinking that this just might be the start of the decline of fnb... another thing: is my money at fnb helping the zimbabwean government? a government that, i believe, has committed serious crimes against humanity. a government that doesn't like freedom of speech. a government that would rather buy planes than feed it's people...

volleyball

on friday evening ed and i were due to play volleyball at the action cricket arena in montague gardens, but earlier in the day he called to say that the team that needed us, no longer does. that meant that i didn't have to rush there after work, i could take my time and meet up with ed later as he was due to play a 2-a-side men's match later anyway. i get there in time to see the match before ed's team, it's more fun playing, so i ended up watching the cricket... ed gets there a little late, but it doesn't matter because his opponents didn't pitch. so a couple of us mess around on the field, basically practising. warren leaves cause he's got a party he's got to get to, ed and i are about to pack up and leave too when a girl comes over and asks if i'd like to play a 5-a-side girls match. yeah, sure! it was really cool too. it's nothing like the 6-a-side mixed team (3 girls and 3 boys). the girls stayed in their positions, they hit the ball and they served like the best of them. they played again later and i joined them again... it's a really good, fun work-out. the 6-a-side mixed team is frustrating as hell right now. the guys don't think us girls can play and they're quite often in our positions, hitting our shots and not often in their position to take the shots we try to pass to them. it's still early days aswell, not everyone has mastered their serves or how to hit the volleyball without it hurting like hell. the only way i know around that is to practise and simply get used to it... anyway, if playing with the 5-a-side girls taught me anything, it's that we are going to be having lots of fun and getting real good at volleyball! i'm so looking forward to the next match...

bastards

the w/end was really nice, even better was that monday was a public holiday... what sucked is that on monday ed (and partners) discovered that the workshop had been broken into. 15k of equipment has been removed, plus some hired equipment. i hope those thieves get what is coming to them. ed is going to post a reward, hopefully one of the crew will rat on one of the others? maybe they're insecure about it or nervous one of the others isn't as trustworthy, it's worth a shot. i am thankful that nothing else was removed from the workshop after the robbery on saturday, as ed only found out yesterday (monday), because the workshop door was left very damaged and wide open. if only they had waited until this w/end because today was (and is) the day that the insurance kicks in because they're installing an alarm and hiring a security firm... ... bastards!

taste?

i need some help, i need to know if i have bad (read: different) taste or what? here are 5 different logos proposed for a company that has the letters 'q' and 'i' in their name, which one of the 5 do you prefer? i have my favourite and then there is the majority who have their favourite... no 1 no 2 no 3 no 4 no 5 reminds me of this: usher was the biggest selling artist latest year (remember that horrible, horrible 'yeah' song?). i mentioned people are stupid. someone said 10 million people can't all be stupid... maybe not, but they sure don't have the same taste as me!

winter

has shown itself this past week and abit. about 2 weeks ago we had the worst traffic because of the (much needed) rain. it came down long and hard, and ofcourse the drainage systems were pretty blocked so there was tons of flooding in the roads and basically everybody had to stick the main (tried and tested) routes... i was stuck in traffic for just over 2 hours, that's got to be the longest i have sat in traffic for years! anyway, winter is indeed moved in really fast, we didn't really have much of an autumn. as much as i hate sitting in traffic, i don't mind the rain one little bit. we really need it right now in the western cape and i'm seeing some changes to the landscape; little roadside pits of water are looking like mini-dams (and smell less now), the lagoon i drive past everyday is looking much better and the grass is definitely greener. i finally got around to adding the other jo'burg pics that i forgot to copy from the camera and i updated the post i made. i also added lauren's baby pic. ps. lloyd don't worry too much about it being winter here, because it's not really kicked into high gear yet, apparently it's going to be over 30 degrees later this week!

Arisen from Oblivion

Hello!!! I am so sorry!!! After not blogging for a while, I totally forgot about it (don't take that personally!) Well, as shy_adam clearly pointed out, Summer is on the way... in fact Nix and myself are going out for drinks along the Thames after work - sitting outside is still a novelty!! Loads have happened since I last posted. It has been Nicky's birthday, Adrian's birthday and a few other big celebrations that called for a few drinkies!! Nicky's birthday celebration was great - we too her to a bar on the top floor of the Hilton in Park Lane - with fab views of London - and had a couple of bottles of champaign, followed by a very drunken dinner at a Moroccan Restaurant and an even drunker dance at a club in Covent Garden!!! Easter break was great! 11 of us went down to Devon for the week end.... and we stayed in a trailor park (yeah, as trailor trash!!!) Enjoyed seeing the sea again, even if the beaches are not nearly as super as those in Cape Town!!! Adrian's birthday was another great week end. We bought him a 'single seater experience' at Silverstone, driving a Formula 3000 car around the track. Adriana and myself went as spectators... and were tempted into doing a bit of driving ourselves!! We had a couple of laps in a super dooper Audi TT V6 and I reached a quick 220km per hour. We then had a passenger ride with a professional driver, which was almost as good as driving myself!!! We then went out for another drunken tequila and cocktail night out in Angel! (yeah, at load of drinking is happening!!!) Been working real hard lately... up to 19:00 most evenings... and quite stressful alot of the time, but have joined a gym across the road and punching and kicking my frustrations at being in the office, out in a few combat classes a week!!! Other than that my dears, not much to tell. Waiting for a few papers from my uncle in Germany to get my visa and then plan to do a bit of European travels in the summer. Been in contact with family in Sweden and they look forward to a vist.... and Nix, Adriana and myself might even go visit Natalie in Chile!!! Well, must be off.... it is Friday and I don't want to keep Nicky waiting by the river in the sun too long!!!!! Have a good week end!! K xxx

is it a blog?

there is abit of a war going on at the moment, at times it's capetonians vs jo'burgers. it all seems rather silly to me, because part of the debate is about whether or not a website is a blog or not (go read it, i'm not going to go into it) anyway, it got me thinking about my own website and whether or not it's a blog (a real live one). because some of the comments i read over at jo'blog made me think otherwise. i do think that part of this site is a blog, some of it is a portpholio and another bit of it is a photo gallery. i don't have permalinks, rss feeds, trackbacks... i never thought about it when i made this dynamic though. not having these elements just means i'm less accessible than others right? so that shouldn't make my website a partial non-blog? do i have to post everyday? do i have to use some other software to update, rather than my own cms? do i have to have rss feeds? do i have to have links in my posts? can some-one please send me the link to the rule book (for all the internets please) because i'm not quite clear on this. at the moment it seems that everybody has their own opinion and the one who launches the best-selling book first will be the leader of all.

Work...work...Play!

With the weather still playing games with us here in Germany I am wondering if there is such a thing as summer, apparently the abrupt change from sunny warm-ish weather to freezing cold stormy windy rainy weather is quite normal for april... so i guess i will have to wait until i arrive back from SA to see whether summer has arrived, I remember summer last year, I think it was a wednesday... he he my favourite joke about the german weather! It has been a couple of weeks of work and travelling, from Holland to Belgium to Nürnberg, all the most exotic locations known to man, In Nürnberg we actually worked at the airport in an amazinly large tent, the rigging point was 20 meters high and of course for someone who does aerial acrobatics i do sometimes suffer from a fear of heights, 20 meters being one of them! We were there for 4 days and it was rather interesting easy work, we stayed at a 4 star hotel at the airport so it was really relaxed and easy money... and of course all i had to do was cross the road to catch my plane, talk about convenience! So now what do i do with my 2 weeks here in berlin before my next job? well I am trying to get my flat sorted out, i seem to have gathered enought stuff over the last couple of years to fill a house, nevermind my little flat, a lot of it very unimportant but somehow not unimportant enough to just throw away, so i guess it is time to get a basement (or a bigger flat which I just cannot justify if I am only gonna be in berlin for 4 months of the year!) Yes I have 2 contracts lined up for when i get back, a 2 month summer contract in the middle of nowhere doing 2 acrobatic shows in the morning and then dressing up as an indian and riding horses in the main show in the afternoon... work... work... play! Another thing about sorting my flat out is that i have to get rid of my anitque furniture which nobody seems to want, I advertised it on E-bay... not one bid, I offered it for free in the local 2nd hand magazine nobody called, now i am thinking of having a giant braai and inviting all my friends... antique barbeque wood... going cheap!

hype

i've often wondered how a crap song can be played on a radio station. more than once. i think it's got to do with money. the record companies pay for that crappy song to be played on the radio, alot. hoping to convince you, the listener, that it's actually popular. you might even think that lots of people have requested that song. nobody wants to be unpopular and not like what 'everyone' else is listening to, so you join in... luckily i have a strong will and will not succumb to the record companies idea; that if i heard a crappy song 10 times in one week i'd actually 'crumble' and start liking it, hell, i might even go out and buy that crappy artists' album! so when i stumbled across this article on bbc news, it just reaffirmed that they really don't care if the music is good, as long as there is hype (a number 1 hit for example) then they're happy and 'rolling in the dosh'. granted it is a business. the artists need to make money, buy mansions and other expensive stuff. not if it's crap though. seems i might even be right: Mr Holmes said it would take several thousand additional sales to push a song from number 20 into the Top 10 and onto Top of the Pops. With songs costing about 79p-99p each online, that would be money well spent for some labels, he added.

spelling

there's an article on news24.com about a woman receiving a traffic fine and there's tons of spelling errors on the document... anyway, some way through the article, news24.com proceed to spell badly: Subpoenas and warrants are apparently cecked for errors before they are posted. how ironic!

have you checked the oil?

i've been in jo'burg for a couple of days. i had thursday, friday, monday and tuesday off in order to go to a friend's wedding and meet alot of the family i've never met and say hi to the ones i have met! ed and i flew with kulula.com and the cape town leg of our journey was pretty 'exciting'. 30 mins into the flight the captain came over on the intercom and announced that we were turning back to cape town because there seems to be a problem with the engine, he's sure it's nothing but he wants to make sure. we will be able to land safely if it stops working, yadda yadda. ed doesn't hear the announcement and only when we're turning around does he ask whats going on. i tell him: the captain said there might be something wrong with the engine but we'll land fine if it stops working, not to worry. what! oops maybe it's not such a cool thing then, but the captain sounded so calm about it that it didn't seem like a major thing to me. anyway, there were a few emergency vehicles chasing after the plane when we landed in cape town. that was kind of spooky and scary. 1 hour of flying and 1 hour of sitting on the ground later we finally headed out to jo'burg, arriving 2 hours late. we got 3 different explanations for the 'problem': 1. the captain's instruments indicate no oil in the one engine, but the maintainence instruments show there is oil. 2. there is no oil in the engine, the maintainence instruments are wrong (didn't check the dipstick i guess?) 3. there was oil in the engine all along, we would've made it jo'burg fine we are told. um, who really wants to fly on plane with faulty instruments? we had no choice though, get off the plane and pay for another ticket was the scenario. we did get vouchers when we landed in jo'burg though, sort of a leap-of-faith thing. spent thursday at my sister-in-law, checking the progress of the baby (due in may/june), met the sperm donator aswell. friday we spent with mom and dad-in-law, saw the groom, gave him some tips etc. saturday we got lost (only a little) on the way to wedding, it started at 9am and we got there at about 9:10am. hung out with some of ed's old chommies and drank a little too much. missed seeing some other friends and ended up spending another night at my sister-in-laws spot. sunday we had a braai in the rain (under a lapa might i add), later we met up with louis and ursula and then retired at kenneth's spot (the groom, he sponsored his place while he was away on honeymoon) for some much needed rest. monday we met up with rene and got some sound advice for ed's business, we reckoned we could've left that evening because we'd pretty much covered all the bases. on tuesday we left, not before we quizzed one of the flight attendants about the oil in the engines. exciting stuff i tell you! surprising stuff i noticed about jo'burg (and it's people): - they check your car ignition at some shopping malls / centres, to see if you're driving with the keys in it or not. we had keys in our ignition, so the boom attendant let us through - i even saw a watch tower at one of the shopping centres - people apologise when you show them that you're cross that they're driving like a 'nana, some even pull over and let you pass - one person didn't bother much when we drove into his mirror after failing to stop lekker in the wet weather (ed's a bloody good driver by the way) - there is so much space for parking at places - traffic jams on highways on sundays - well organised roads update: - roadside diners - security... lots of it i'll add more as i think of them, and the photo's are here!

Here comes the sun!

So finally after months and months of an extremely COLD winter has the sun decided to grace us with its presence, there are little buds forming on the trees and there are a couple of brave flowers fighting the last of the cold winter breeze, yeah if it was not for the nippy wind you would think that it was summer already! The next couple of weeks sees me travelling quite a lot before my next big trip HOME, yes on the 2nd of may I will finally be in Cape Town for 3 weeks to celebrate my coming of age... okay not really just the big 30... finally i am a fully fledged adult... with absolutly no commitments and no responsibilities ans a life full of wild nights out and lazy days sleeping.... oh the perfect exzistence? but of course then it is back to the grindstone and off to the middle of nowhere for 2 months summer theatre, doing 2 shows in the morning and then riding horses in the afternoon show for a little more cash... yeah money makes the world go round... and besides will keep me from going insanly bored like i did last year! I will suffer by not having an internet connection that is easy to get too... but i survived last year so i think i will survive again! Anyway that is what life is like here right now! WHERE ARE THE OTHER BLOGGERS??

a long lazy w/end

ed and i went away to clanwilliam this easter and had a wonderfully relaxed w/end. lots of food, drink, late nights and even later mornings. the weather was pretty damn cool too. we also bought some more pellet guns (the plastic pellet type) and the boys shot the crap out of each other, with a few choice shots from the girls might i add. check out the pictures driving back was a bit of nightmare and the route we took is highly unrecommended if you're not driving a bakkie or 4x4 of some sorts. we decided to go through lamberts bay and head along the west coast... alas there are few tar roads and many gravel ones that aren't good for big cars like combi's. we ended up breaking down 3 times. a journey that should've been no more than 2-3 hours took more than 6 hours. we eventually got stuck just outside of piketberg (so much for the coastal route) and had to wait for help in the form of elkart having to travel all the way from melkbos to simply give us a jump start... sheez! nobody stopped to help us, which doesn't say much for mank-ind. this left us running mighty late for dinner with dyan, vincent, melanie, sharon and gareth. which was scheduled at 7:30pm, round about the time we finally got the car started again. we finally got to dinner exhausted, thirsty and hungry at 9pm. if you're in the table view area, you must give colours a try. it's above mimmos where the old saddles used to be, just before countdown and doodles along the beachfront.

not again

arrgggh. 5fm has actually gone and done it again! they're changing their line-up and ditching some more of the foundations that made them the best national radio station in sa. barney simon and derek the bandit are the latest victims, with alex jay and mark pilgrim being some of the initial victims, way back in 2002 and 2003. mark pilgrim was the saving grace for me after alex jay got axed, even though i only got to hear his show on the odd occassion if i didn't sleep in on w/ends. i must admit that i vowed to not listen to the station after alex got the boot, but they weren't that bad yet. now i can not say the same though. in my opinion, the music being played and the personalities are far less superior. i'm sick of switching that radio station on to hear yet another horrible r&b / crap pop tune, again! there is not a single other radio station that could compare to what 5fm was when alex, mark, barney and derek were all part of the line-up. the only dj's i like on their current line-up are zuraida and kevin fine and as luck would have it, their shows are during times when i am not near a radio or i am sleeping! so, i better start sorting out the cd's in my car... update: new line-up mentioned here, nothing about barney and derek getting the boot though.

i wonder

i've been meaning to post about my horrible experience of registering my paid off car into my name and no longer the banks. i got all the documentation together and i went there pretty early on a saturday last month, only to be confronted with a queue of 13 people in front of me. this particular saturday i had to get to another place in durbanville and then be back in melkbos for an appointment at 11:45am. so i had about an hour to stand and wait for my turn. an hour, 2 tellers this should happen right? there's only like 5 different forms that they could possibly process and most of the people in front of me looked like they were simply renewing their car registration. half an hour later and the queue hadn't moved at all. this pissed me off to no end. now did the guys in the front not have the right documentation, therefor holding up the rest of us? if so, why were they even being seen to? i don't get it... they should have an efficient system in place by now with all the money they're making on speeding fines, licences and registration fees? surely the tellers know what's going on? pink form, ah, enter this number, tab, type something else, tab, tab, type, tab, enter... there you go. or not? why not? anyway, i left my spot in the queue and went to durbanville where there was another queue. i did make it back to melkbos with a few minutes to spare though. so the following week, i bravely head out to the traffic department again. this time the queue is horrendous, something like 20-30 people. i've had a late night and standing in a queue of this size is the last thing i wanna do. so i leave, not before checking that i do infact have all the right documentation... seems like they require a roadworthy certificate too. aha well, thank goodness i checked! so during the week i get a roadworthy certificate (r190.00) and that saturday i head out to the traffic department extra early (no idea what time they open on a saturday as they don't have their times up anywhere and they don't answer their phones either... surprise!). there are 6 people in front of me. i'm thinking 2 hours and i'll be seen to. not even, within 30 minutes it was my turn. i was amazed and stunned. this just made me more confused about my first visit to the department 3 weeks prior, standing there waiting for 30 minutes and the queue not moving at all. anyway, i get told i don't need a roadworthy certificate (but the sign says i do) otherwise it goes smoothly. but the chick takes my roadworthy certificate that she didn't need anyway, plus i get 'fined' for not registering the car into my name within 21 days. if they were more efficient than i wouldn't have had to pay extra. i would've done this 3 weeks ago! so they make more money off of me and two-thirds of the time they're are pretty flippin' inefficient. that doesn't feel like money well spent to me.

no more SNOW!

Okay, so i know that is is supposed to be the end of winter and the beginning of spring, but could someone please tell that to mother nature... it is snowing again here in berlin, and i don't mean a little i mean a LOT! and i just checked the forcast and it says it should snow at least until tuesday...am I mistaken or is it almost the middle of march now... there is something wrong with this... I guess i usually miss this part of the weather because my trips home are usually around this time of the year and I get to catch the last rays of summer sun ;) but not this year... unless it is still sunny and warm in may;) anyway... i am sure the summer will arrive soon, at least it is only 1° and not-35° he he!

frogs

since the end of last week there has been a drastic increase in the frog population in the pond. the frog clicking noise has been driving me nuts, to the point where i cannot get to sleep because it's constantly clicking... so i have been wearing ear-plugs. that means i don't hear anything anymore, not even the alarm in the morning. that means if ed doesn't wake me, i'm likely to oversleep... anyway, so frog population zero last week, one this week. or so i thought. after trying to hunt and get rid of the high-pitched clicking culprit on tuesday night with no success whatsoever, last night i succeeded in getting rid of 3 frogs! yes, 3! but the high-pitched clicking continued. i slept with the ear plugs in and had a restful nights sleep. this morning i leaned over the bridge and looked under only to find (to my horror) 2 more frogs. there could be more, i only saw 2! there is also no way to get under the bridge without actually climbing into the pond. surely there must be an easier way to get rid of high-pitched clicking frogs? tonight i'll try and get those frogs. i just hope they haven't laid eggs, the slimey buggers!

Frolicking in France

So what can i say about -35°C weather.... it is COLD that is of course not counting the wind chill factor, But of course as you are speading down the slopes of the french alps on a snowboard you kind of forget that it is that cold... Snowboarding is definatly the way forward, it is kind of like skateboarding but not... i fell a lot on my first day and was soooo bruised i had to strap knee guards to my but the next day and the next and the next ;)) but by the 3rd day i was doing jumps in the board park and have some really great footage of me falling (HARD ;)) but it was worth it, we also went off piste (which means off the designated area and bundu bashed thropught the snow which was up to our thighs at times, it is so cool to be speeding along and to only see your waist!) Anyway there were a lot of parties too and so the 9am mornings were tough but all in all it was a great week! will post some pics next time!
